Mastitis
Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast tissue that may or may not involve infection. It typically occurs when milk is not effectively drained and becomes stagnant within the ducts. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as latching difficulties, positioning challenges, missed feeds, oversupply, cracked nipples, or pressure from underwire bras or tight clothing.
At Base Physiotherapy, we take a holistic and gentle approach to mastitis care. Many cases can be effectively managed without antibiotics by addressing the underlying causes and using targeted physiotherapy techniques to support healing and comfort.
Common Symptoms
Women experiencing mastitis or engorgement may notice symptoms such as:
· Redness and heat in one area of the breast
· Swelling or a firm, painful lump
· Fever or flu-like symptoms including chills and fatigue
· Pain or discomfort during or after feeding
Early treatment can reduce symptoms quickly and support continued breastfeeding.
It’s important to treat your breast tissue gently. Firm massage can worsen inflammation or compress nearby milk ducts. Our physiotherapists will show you safe and comfortable techniques to support drainage and healing.
