Who we are

Your body continues to change after having a baby.

Base Physiotherapy & Pilates provides specialised Postpartum and Postnatal Physiotherapy in our clinic in Drummoyne.

Postpartum Physiotherapy can help you understand these changes and safely work towards rebuilding strength and returning to exercise. Our Physiotherapists provide personalised assessment and treatment for pelvic floor, abdominal, bladder, bowel, back and pelvic concerns after birth.

Whether your baby is six days or six years old, whether you had a vaginal or caesarean birth, it's never too late to get checked and supported.

Our approach is individualised. We take the time to understand your recovery, symptoms and goals before developing a plan suited to you.

Postnatal check

A thorough check after birth, however you gave birth

Your six week medical check focuses on your general recovery. A pelvic health physio check looks closely at your pelvic floor, abdominal wall and back, so you know what's healing well and what needs support. We recommend booking from around six weeks after a vaginal or caesarean birth, and it's never too late if your baby is already older.

Your check includes

Pelvic floor strength & coordination
Abdominal separation check
Caesarean scar & perineal healing
Bladder & bowel function
Safe return to exercise & running
Recovery concerns

What can Postpartum Physiotherapy help with?

We can assess and provide guidance for a full range of concerns after birth. Open any topic below for detail.

Pelvic Floor Weakness

Pelvic floor muscles are stretched and stressed through pregnancy and birth. We assess strength and coordination and build a program to suit your recovery.

Urinary Leakage

Leaking is common after having a baby, but it's not something you need to live with. Pelvic floor training guided by a physio is an effective first treatment for leaking with coughing, sneezing or exercise.

Pelvic Heaviness

A feeling of heaviness or dragging can have several causes. Your physiotherapist can assess your symptoms and develop strategies to improve pelvic floor function.

Abdominal Separation

Physiotherapy can assess abdominal separation and guide you through appropriate exercises to rebuild strength and function.

Caesarean Scar & Perineal Healing

We check how your scar or perineal area is healing and advise on what supports recovery, so you know what's normal and what needs attention.

Pelvic or Back Pain

Pain after birth can be linked to pregnancy changes, feeding and carrying your baby. We assess your symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment approach.

Bladder & Bowel Concerns

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy may help with urgency, constipation, difficulty emptying the bowel and other pelvic floor related symptoms.

Not sure whether we can help? Call (02) 7265 1425 and we'll talk it through.

Return to exercise

Rebuild, then return to the activities you enjoy.

Your physiotherapist will develop a program based on your individual recovery, symptoms and goals, and progress it as you get stronger.

01

Early Recovery

Understand your changes, gentle movement, breathing and early pelvic floor and core activation.

02

Rebuild Strength

Progressive exercise for your pelvic floor, abdominals, back and hips as your recovery allows.

03

Return to Exercise

A safe, guided return to the gym, classes and the activities you enjoy.

04

Higher Level Activity

Guidance on returning to running and higher level activity when your body is ready.

Add Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates can also be incorporated into your rehabilitation where appropriate. Our physiotherapists can tailor exercises to help you rebuild strength, improve movement and gradually return to the activities you enjoy.

Mastitis & breast care

Fast, gentle care when feeding gets painful

What is mastitis?

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that most commonly occurs during breastfeeding, but it can also affect women at other times. It often develops when milk flow is blocked within the breast, leading to swelling, pain and sometimes infection.

Mastitis can come on quickly and may significantly impact comfort, feeding, and overall wellbeing. Early assessment and treatment are important to relieve symptoms, support continued breastfeeding where desired, and reduce the risk of complications such as abscess formation.

Our Mastitis & Breast Care service focuses on relieving inflammation, improving milk flow, supporting healing, and providing education to help prevent recurrence.

Treatment may include

Therapeutic ultrasound
Gentle lymphatic drainage
Feeding & positioning advice
Ice & comfort strategies

We also help with blocked ducts and engorgement.

If you feel unwell or feverish, see your GP as well.
