What is dry needling?

Fine needles, used as part of your rehab

Dry needling uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles placed into muscle and soft tissue. It's called "dry" because nothing is injected. Physiotherapists use it to help ease muscle tension and pain, so you can move more comfortably and get more out of your exercise program.

What to expect

A full assessment

We look at what's driving your pain first, then decide whether dry needling suits you.

Your consent

We explain what's involved and any risks. You can say no, or stop, at any time.

Treatment

Needles stay in for a short time. You may feel a dull ache or a brief local twitch.

Afterwards

Some mild soreness for a day or so is common. We pair needling with exercise you can keep doing at home.

Dry needling FAQs

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

No. Both use fine needles, but dry needling is based on anatomy and a physiotherapy assessment, targeting muscles and soft tissue as part of your rehab plan.

Does it hurt?

The needles are very fine, so most people feel little as they go in. You may feel a dull ache or a brief twitch in the muscle, and some soreness afterwards.

Is it safe?

Our physiotherapists use sterile, single-use needles and follow strict safety and hygiene standards. We check your medical history first, as dry needling isn't suitable for everyone.

Can I claim on private health?

Yes. Dry needling is part of a physiotherapy appointment, so private health rebates apply as usual.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. Book a physiotherapy appointment online or by phone.
